Insectos que varían en tamaño, forma, color y función
Insectos que se nutren a sí mismos y al huerto
Insectos que se arrastran, se deslizan, se agitan y alzan vuelo

I Am Amazed by the Queerness of Nature

I am a nonbinary caretaker of the earth
I am a gardener who tends to community gardens
Gardens that provide food, curiosity, comfort and nutrition
Gardens that foster community and transformation
Gardens that curate shared experiences, knowledge and potential
I am a nonbinary caretaker of the earth
I drench the soil with water and nutrients
Water and nutrients that travel sideways in the bed and up the plant
I move with care the soil to make a hole to place the seeds
Seeds that are paired to provide shade, companionship and protection
I glance at the child’s smile as they watch me pick up the insects
Insects that vary in size, shape, color and function
Insects that nourish themselves and the garden
Insects that crawl, creep, wiggle and fly
I am a nonbinary caretaker of the earth
I celebrate the diversity of the earth
The intersex animals, the asexual plants and bacteria, the polyamorous mammals
I am amazed by the queerness in nature
In nature: the mothers that hunt, the fathers that care for the young
In nature: the siblings that become honorary aunts and uncles
In nature: the community that forms without hierarchy and societal roles
I am a nonbinary caretaker of the earth
I look to nature for examples of community and individual care
Mothers guarding their young
Fathers hunting and scavenging
Aunts and uncles protecting the tribe
Gender bending roles based on skills and preference
Males giving birth
Females hunting and killing prey
Intersex animals surviving and thriving
I look to nature for examples of design
Mosaic pieces in the beehives
Woven strands of spider webs
Weathered and chipped rocks a creating a mountain
Peeling trees surrounded by differently shaped pieces of bark
Fallen leaves landing on the ground as though they were gently placed there
The irises of insects - kaleidoscope view of shapes, colors and sizes
I am a nonbinary caretaker of the earth
I rely on Nature for wisdom and understand
I rely on Nature for creativity and inspiration
Nature is the original teacher and designer
Nature shows me how to care, love and create
Nature lives outside the black and white zone
Nature emerges from the binary system
Nature shows me how to adapt with my environment
Artist Bio
Kadijah Spence
They/Them // Elle
Kadijah Spence studied environmental education and researched Jewish values in Jewish environmental education. Kadijah integrates their cultural and social identities into their work to form welcoming and affirming educational spaces. Currently, they are an NYC Teaching Fellow earning a Biology Certification and navigating the transition from teaching at religious school to teaching in a public school setting. Their passions include gardening, nature walks, writing poetry, coloring, and watching action movies. They love to explore nature and connect with their inner self through music and community. When taking moments for themself, Kadijah notices that they are recharging their battery to continue educating and advocating for their communities.
Kadijah Spence finds their joy in poetry and deep discussion about cultural, religious and scientific experiences.
Kadijah Spence estudió educación ambiental e investigó los valores judíos en la educación ambiental judía. Kadijah integra sus identidades culturales y sociales en su trabajo para formar espacios educativos acogedores y reafirmantes. Actualmente, es une Colega Educadore en NYC que está obteniendo una Certificación en Biología y navegando la transición de la enseñanza en la escuela religiosa a la enseñanza en un entorno de escuela pública.
